Attendance Watch for Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013: 3 of 3 are sellouts

There were three games in the NHL on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, and all three were sellouts. This marks the first night in the NHL that all games on the schedule sold out — including Opening Night.

Chicago continues to have the best overall attendance at an average crowd of 21,416. At the bottom — not much of a surprise here — Phoenix, with an average of 12,348 (72 percent capacity). The Islanders are just ahead of Phoenix with an average of 12,766 (78 percent capacity).

It's not at all surprising the league's two-worst attendance numbers come from a team moving in a few years and another with an unclear future.

The average game, league wide, is 17,655.

Some 21 teams are at or above full capacity on the year.

Three others — including the Devils — are at 97 percent or higher.

Trends

The biggest jump in attendance this year over last?

If you'd asked me this a few weeks ago, I'd have said no way — but it is our New Jersey Devils, who are nearly 2,000 ahead, on average, (17,222) over last year's attendance average of 15,396 (10 percent higher percent-capacity, too).

The Devils' best-ever attendance average was 1997-98, when crowds that year were 7th best in the NHL and averaged 17,296 (91 percent capacity) at the 19,040 seat Continental Airlines Arena. (Still love that seating capacity at the old barn — Dr. John McMullen's early reminder to the Rangers about an important year).
