2014 Marty Award — Color Commentator of the Year:
Chico Resch of your NJ Devils

He is retiring. So of course, the 2014 Marty Award for Color Commentator of the Year goes to our own Chico Resch. Even those of you who didn’t care for Chico — go on and admit it — you’re going to miss him now that he’s gone!

I took this photo of Chico outside the Prudential Center at the very-first Devils game ever played at the Rock in October 2007.

2014 Marty Award — NHL’s Best Third Jersey: NY Rangers

OK so it’s the Rangers. It’s a nice sweater — that’s all. I never said I would wear one.

2014 Marty Award — Best Devils’ Sweater:
Stadium Series Red & Green

We’re big fans of the Devils green — so the 2014 Marty for the Best Devils Sweater goes to the Stadium Series throwback from January (and March).

2014 Marty Award — Best Broadcaster Who Should Be a Devils Broadcaster: Seth Everett

The 2014 Marty Award for the Best Broadcaster Who Should Be a Devils Broadcaster is the great Seth Everett, currently the Mets pre- and post-game host from WOR-710 radio in New York, and a long-time diehard Devils fan.

We’ve long been advocates for getting Seth on to the Devils’ broadcast team — and will always hold out hope that it happens one day soon.

2014 Marty Award — Hockey Sweater of the Year: This one, belonging to Steven Schaffer, a diehard NY Rangers fan

The 2014 Marty for Hockey Sweater of the Year goes to Steven Schaffer for this hockey sweater. You may be asking — how can you give this sweater this award? It knocks Devils fans!

Well, indeed it does. But it is a very creative sweater — and Steven wears it to games at the Prudential Center — and he takes the comments he gets from a**hole Devils fans in stride.

When I was a kid, I used to think there was no such thing as a class-act Rangers fan. Schaffer taught me otherwise ... he truly did. And it’s opened my eyes to many other Rangers fans are are truly good people. We cannot fault them that they were raised improperly, to root for an inferior hockey organization.

We really can’t.

Some people’s families just never understood that the right thing to do, in 1982, was to jump ship if you lived in the Garden State. So we’ve forgiven all Rangers fans who didn’t jump ship.

This is 1 of about 300 sweaters Steven Schaffer owns.

Also, by choosing this sweater, I want fellow Devils fans to realise that there comes a time when you just have to let go of the animosity sometimes. The first instinct, upon seeing this sweater, would likely, for most, be to yell obscenities at Steven. And yet, few would stop to realise he’s a good man who, beyond the team he roots for, is quite intelligent.

And he’s actually a brilliant hockey mind, too — one who knows so much more than just his own team.

So we present this award today sincerely. And we do so knowing that despite the hatred between the fans of our two teams, there can be times where the rivalry presents something to smile and laugh about.

And this sweater is a fine example of that.

Plus, anyone with the balls to wear this at a road game deserves some sort of credit, no?

And it goes to Wayne Simmonds, of the Philadelphia Flyers.

2014 Marty Award: NHL PA Announcer of the Year:
Gene Honda, Chicago Blackhawks

The 2004 Marty Award for PA Announcer of the Year goes to Gene Honda of the Chicago Blackhawks. Honda is also the White Sox PA announcer. Ironically, Gene travels to all of his games in his car which, of course, is a Honda. Why did we pick Honda? It’s simple — his voice does not match how he looks. Hear for yourself (plus get one of the greatest national anthem anywhere in the process).

2014 Marty Award: The Meme of the Year — w/thanks to Jim Neubig

Here’s the winning entry for the 2014 Marty Award for Best Meme of the Year. This award would not have been made possible were it not for the tireless efforts of our friend, the great James Neubig, of Nutley, N.J. Thank you, Jim, for always reminding us of the reality of this amazing photo. We call it “Jim Neubig’s Beach Ball.”

2014 Marty Award: The Single-Most Annoying Road Fan Ever

The 2014 Marty for the Single-Most Annoying Road Fan Ever goes to this a**hole Flyers fan who posed like this at least 20 times during this particular game at the Prudential Center in Newark.

2014 Marty Award: PBP Announcer of the Year

The 2014 Marty for Play-by-Play Announcer of the Year goes to Kenny Albert, of NBC, NBCSN and the New York Rangers. Kenny was tremendous in 2014, especially the post-season, where he called both Conference Finals (the West for NBC and the East on the Rangers Radio Network) and Game 1 of the Finals. If there was ever any question who the successor to Doc Emrick would be once the Doctor retires, it should be clear now it’s Kenny.

Just think about the Conference Finals alone. Kenny did 13 games in that round -- seven in the West and six in the East. It required him going from Montréal to Chicago back to Montréal then back to Chicago then to New York to Los Angeles back to New York then back to Los Angeles and on and on. Safe to say he likely was the most traveled private citizen in the world those two weeks?

We are big fans of Kenny Albert here at NewJersey-Devils.com -- and it was with ease he’s our choice for PBP man of the year.

In second, Don LaGreca, also of the Rangers Radio Network, for one game he called -- and nearly suffered a heart attack calling -- Game 1 of the Finals.

If you haven’t heard that one yet -- the last minute of play -- we’ve embedded it here. It’s priceless.

Finishing in third -- Michael “Doc” Emrick, just because he is Doc.

The first (hopefully annual) NewJersey-Devils Marty Awards:
Marty for Anthem Singer of the Year: Ginette Reno

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. —
So now that the summer is here, things are slow and the Devils appear to be done in the free-agent market, I thought I’d commence with the first-ever (and hopefully annual) NewJersey-Devils Marty Awards (The Martys).

We’ll look back at the past season (in this case 2 seasons to kick things off) and give out awards they don’t give out at the Vegas NHL Awards Show. We’ll do a few a day -- and if you think of a creative category we haven’t, drop me an e-mail to kevincanessa@gmail.com.

We start out with this year’s Marty for National Anthem Singer of the Year -- and the Marty goes to Madame Ginette Reno, of the Montréal Canadiens. (Second place was Jim Corneileson of the Blackhawks and third place was Arlette).
