Wild game in Edmonton — Oilers nearly royally screwed

EDMONTON, Alberta

The Edmonton Oilers were nearly screwed, royally, last night, out of a point. But they found a way to get two despite horrendous officiating.

With just about a minute left in the third period, trailing 1-0 to Los Angeles, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored to tie the game. But somehow, after a lengthy discussion, (and Jonathan Quick bitching quite a bit), the officials called the goal back on goaltender interference.

Thing is — there was absolutely no interference. None at all.

The fans were irate, throwing crap all over the ice.

When play resumed, the Oilers tied the game with about 4 seconds left on the clock on a goal from Nail Yakupov.

Then, in OT, Sam Gagner scored to give Edmonton an incredible win.

And oh, did we mention the champs are now 0-3 (only they and Washington are winless).

Had this game not gone to OT, the Oilers would have had every reason to believe they were screwed.

Here's a photo look at the events that transpired. (UPDATE: Video added).

Nugent-Hopkins scores to tie the game — but the goal was called back.

Fans threw objects on to the ice — including beer (see the glass).

The fans were irate. And they had every reason to be.

Nail Yakupov scored to tie it — really.

Gagner scores the game-winner in OT.
