I debated, a long time, whether to flip this with the first Cup win from 1995. But from a pure excitement point of view, there was never a more exciting call -- or, for that matter, moment -- that Doc called for the Devils. We go back to just two years ago in the Eastern Conference Finals. Game No. 6 in overtime. To me, the greatest Doc Emrick Devils call of all time.
The Devils head out west this week -- and the road, which has not been too kind to the team -- will likely help determine whether this is or isn't a playoff team.
One thing is for sure: if Jaromir Jagr continues his great play, he'll still need two guys to begin to show their worth -- Adam Henrique and Travis Zajac.
Neither has shown any signs of turning things around and frankly, it's very disappointing seeing how each has played. But Zajac's issues go well beyond the start of this season.
At the 9:25 mark of the second period tonight, Adam Henrique was butt-ended by Craig Anderson’s stick. It was blatantly on purpose. And the officials promptly assessed Henrique with a 2-minute cross-checking penalty. I think I’ve now seen it all.
And while we're here, let's reminisce a bit to Game 7 on the series against the Panthers in 2012. One of my favourite parts of this goal is that just before it happened, the 'fans' were chanting "Marty! Marty!"
I absolutely promised I'd stop going back to Adam Henrique and his OT goal against the New York Rangers on May 25, 2012. And I will. But of course, as the Devils prepare for their first meeting with the New York Rangers tomorrow night, the media is doing a good job of resurrecting what happened last year.
And then, it hit me.
And maybe it's because it was two rounds earlier.
Maybe it's because it wasn't against the Rangers.
Maybe I just can't remember much.
But this guy, as a rookie, won TWO series with overtime goals. Not one. Two.
And that first one, against the Panthers, was in double OT.
It's gonna be a great matchup against the Rangers Tuesday — and don't let them or their fans kid you when they say they want revenge. In the meantime, however, it's just mind-numbing to think of what Henrique did just a few months ago.
We can only hope he comes close to matching that again tomorrow night and beyond.
