Forbes drops Devils down by one spot in 2013 NHL Value Rankings

Forbes recently released their annual rankings of the NHL’s most valuable franchises and this year the New Jersey Devils have dropped one spot.

Listed at number 19 in the League in  2012, the Devils 2013 ranking sits at number 20, still not a bad position in my opinion for a team that’s been struggling with winning back fans after the lockout.

When the Devils where owned by Ray Chambers and Jeff Vanderbeek they were valued at $205 million, but under the new ownership of Joshua Harris and David Blitzer they are valued at $320 million, meaning that the shift in dollar value is up, but the ranking is down.

There was a big increase in franchise value for other teams this year and the Minnesota Wilds took over the Devils previous number 19 spot on the list.

The August sale of the Devils to Philadelphia 76ers owner Harris and business partner Blitzer for $320 million doesn’t necessarily add value to the NHL franchise in terms of the League and at the time of sale the next highest bid came in at only $240 million. Harris doesn’t have much to worry about though, as earlier this year his net worth was estimated by Forbes to be $2.5 billion, earning him 21st place on the list of the wealthiest team owners in US sport.

Regardless of the drop in ranking, the team’s league value is still $320 million- and the only way I could ever come close to having even a tiny bit of that kind of money would be to a hit a massive jackpot at a site like www.mobilecasinocanada.ca.

Interestingly, the Devils rivals are a lot more valuable this year with the New York Rangers being beaten only by the Toronto Maple Leafs who took first place. The Rangers are worth $850 million and the Philadelphia Flyers came in at 7th place and are worth $500 million.

Perhaps the most remarkable part of the whole NHL team valuation results is that the Devils only dropped one spot and I’m so hoping that next year they reclaim their 2012 position, or even better it.

What are your thoughts on the 2013 NHL value rankings? Do you think the Devils can improve their value by next year?
