Anton Volchenkov's hit on Brad Marchand was despicable. Plain and simple. There is no excuse. There is no rationale. There is nothing that could justify what that man did tonight. At all. And it's scary, because New Jersey Devils players DO NOT do what he did.
Yet he did.
Players playing for Jacques Lemaire wouldn't do that. And it makes me wonder if Peter DeBoer has totally lost this team. And that, my friends, is sad. It's beyond sad.
Keith Jones called it "suspendable."
Mike Milbury called it "cowardly and a little dirty."
And I'm not disagreeing with them. I rarely agree with either.
The NHL will passively doing the Devils a huge favour by suspending Volchenkov for five games. He deserves nothing less.
