Islanders’ announcer Butch Goring not a fan of recent hockey history

Butch Goring — never boring.

There’s no doubt this weekend’s game between the Islanders and Rangers will be one of the biggest in years for the team from Nassau. But when the New York Post asked Islanders commentator Butch Goring what he thought of the upcoming regular-season match, he seemed to forget the Rangers were within two games of getting to the Stanley Cup Finals last year.

“That’s going to be the biggest game the Islanders and Rangers have played for a long time,” Goring said. “The interest there is going to be fabulous and the crowd is going to be tremendous.”

I can only think he meant to say against each other. Because if he didn't, he’s clearly forgotten the Rangers played in quite a few big games last year.

Now with most, I'd chalk it up to being an “against each other” deal. But this is Goring. And Goring’s said crazier things before.

Regardless, it will be a very intense game at the Coliseum, one that will likely be more of a home game for the road team. Did you see the last time the two teams played in Uniondale? In the 41 years the two teams have played games on the Islander, it was one of the most unbalanced crowds for the bad guys that I’ve ever seen.
