If Kovy wants back, un-retire the Concorde to fly him to EWR

Ilya Kovalchuk
NEWARK —

I have no idea where this guy’s source came from. He doesn’t identify it. But Rant Sports usually had responsible sports journalism.

According to the report — and I’ve not seen this so-called rumor — there is talk of Ilya Kovalchuk wanting to come back to the Devils — or something like that.

I couldn’t care less about the past. If this man wants to come back — at a more reasonable contract — as I wrote in the headline, I’d find a way to un-retire the Concorde and fly him from Moscow to Newark in a heartbeat.

Some will vehemently disagree with this because of the way he bolted — and I totally get that.

But what I also get is we’re two years removed from his departure, two years removed from a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals with him — and Game 6 of the 2012 Finals was the last post-season game this team played in ... with Kovalchuk on it.

So, regardless of whether this is just a rumor, if the day comes Ilya Kovalchuk says he wants to return to the NHL and the Devils, my door, my wallet and my Concorde are ready to welcome him back.

With the widest of open arms.
